Year 7 Exploring Careers: Understanding Sectors
On Tuesday 11th March 2025, Matt Smith from the Department of Work and Pensions had the pleasure of delivering a session on understanding sectors, aimed at helping students explore the different career paths available across various industries. They began by discussing what exactly a sector is, diving into the broad categories that make up our economy, such as healthcare, technology, finance, and the arts.
To make the learning experience more engaging, Matt split the students into groups and assigned each group a different sector to explore. Their task was to research key aspects of their assigned sector, including:
- Types of Jobs: The various career opportunities within each sector.
- Wages: The typical pay in these industries.
- Qualifications: The education and skills needed for success in these fields.
- Interesting Facts: Unique or surprising information about their sector.
- Famous People: Notable individuals who have worked in that sector.
Once the groups completed their research, they presented their findings to the rest of the class. This allowed everyone to learn from each other and gain insight into the wide range of career options available across industries.
The students seemed to enjoy the session, engaging deeply with their topics and asking thoughtful questions. Many began considering various career paths they hadn’t thought of before, inspired to continue researching and planning for their future. The session not only helped students learn about different sectors but also sparked curiosity about the possibilities that await them in the world of work.
We would like to thank Matt Smith for his engaging workshops for all our Year 7's.
