Careers

At Hylands School, we recognise that effective careers guidance contributes to raising aspirations, improving motivation and overcoming barriers to success.

Our school has a critical role to play in preparing our young people for the next stage of their education or training and beyond. Our expectations are high, including for our most vulnerable and those with special educational needs and disabilities, so that every student is challenged appropriately and acquires the knowledge, skills and attitudes for lifelong learning and that employer’s value. This will help every young person to realise their potential and enhance their employability.

Organisation

Careers resources, available in the Learning Resource Centre for all students are relevant and up-dated regularly. Access to careers software, including Unifrog, and the internet is easily available. Participation in activities, both in school and off-site, provide employer contact and further information.

The School also employs the services of an external IAG provider Directions Careers Adviser and Department for Work and Pensions run in association with Essex Community Engagement Team to support all pupils in school, [particularly those who are vulnerable/ statemented.

The School uses Unifrog; the complete destinations platform – a one-stop-shop for students across all key stages regardless of their interests or academic ability. It is the only place where students can compare every university course, apprenticeship and FE course in the UK as well as universities in 30 other countries across the world. This is alongside getting access to labour market information and advice on careers and subjects for all routes.

Students record and evidence their key activities & competencies and prepare their CVs and personal statements, CEIAG interactions recording and destination tracking tools – all in line with the Gatsby Benchmarks. This tool is used by all pupils in the school and parents are also provided with an account login should they wish.

Careers focused activities delivered through the curriculum are provided and include activities about work to develop knowledge and for work to develop skills.
