This week Hylands School took part in the First Round of the National Schools Athletics Competition at Melbourne Stadium. It’s the first time in over 10 years we have entered and continues our push on extra curricular competitions at Hylands.
This competition is unique in the fact each competitor must compete in two events each and it’s based on scoring points not positions in the events. So every second and cm counts. The pupils also compete as Juniors (Year 7 and 8 combined) or Inters (Year 9 and 10 combined).
This means it’s much harder to pick a team to compete as we are still learning everyones abilities but is a great opportunity for pupils to try a couple of events and find their strengths.

The pupils did amazingly.  For many it was the first time completing their event in full, such as hurdles and triple jump. The first time on a proper track with specialist facilities and the first time competing against such high level competition as we had national standard competitors against us.
Some notable performances were Margo – Hurdles, Emmanuel – High Jump, Tristan – Discus, Jadon L – Shot and Leon who did well in both his events, High Jump and 1500m.
We now move our focus on to the districts next half term.
